Happiest Country In The World

How to summarize Finland? As of writing this, four time "Happiest Country In The World" in a row by the United Nations. Finland's capital Helsinki was chosen as the "Happiest City In The World" on the latest ratings. But is that really how to summarize Finland? Those rankings are wonderful but does it really capture the essence of Finland? As a native Finn I would say no.
Relying on statistics alone is dangerous. Above we mentioned a very positive statistic, Finland is 4 times in a row chosen as the "Happiest Country In The World". Let's share some not so positive statistics of Finland. In 2018 while Finland was chosen as the "Happiest Country In The World" second time in a row we saw 25-30 percent increase on alcohol-related violent deaths. Now that's not what happy people do right? In 2018 one third of all deaths among 15- to 24-year-olds were caused by suicide. Why would people in the prime of their life choose suicide in the "Happiest Country In The World"? 2019 more than 400,000 people in Finland were taking anti-depressants. That is a lot in a country of 5.5 million. So everything can be viewed from different aspects.

Why are these negative aspects brought up? Because they exist. I have been writing about Finland and especially Finnish metal music for over 25 years and I have countered situations where I was reminded that things are not always so "nice" and "pretty" in Finland. As much as I hate to admit that, it is true. So consider this as a bit different trip to the land we call Finland.

Finnish Sisu

You have probably heard the word SISU used in a Finland related context at some point. Sisu as referred by Wikipedia is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience and hardiness and is held by Finns themselves to express their national character. It is generally considered not to have a literal equivalent in English. Sisu is heavily related to Finland just like Perkele. But what is Finnish Sisu?
